Chemical Peel: How it works

Don’t let the term “chemical peel” scare you away! These are proven, scientific and relatively safe treatments that are used to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin. ‘ Mild peels like AHA help skin look smoother and brighter, decrease pore size and can even help with acne and superficial pigmentation.

Stronger peels, such as a Jessner’s and TCA peels, work by triggering your skin’s wound healing response by dissolving the upper layers of the skin which stimulates the body’s healing response, causing new healthy tissue to emerge. The depth and strength of every peel varies based upon the strength of the chemicals used and the length of time the solution is applied.

Some of the basic peels are-

Alpha Hydroxy Acid peels (AHA)

AHA are mild peels and will only penetrate the superficial layers of skin. These are naturally derived like Glycolic acid (sugarcane), Lactic acid (sour milk), mandelic acid (almonds), citric acid (citrus). By dissolving the top layer of skin, pores are instantly unclogged and black heads are erased nearly instantaneously and the glowing results last for up to a month

The peel is used to treat mild skin discolorations, acne, skin roughness and for rejuvenation. They are not indicated for wrinkles. Mild redness, dryness may occur for 3-4 days following the treatment. Multiple sessions every 2 weekly are ideal for desired results.

Beta hydroxy acid peels (BHA)

BHA peel (Salicylic acid) is naturally derived from Willow bark tree. It works exceptionally well on acne, pores, rosacea and oily skin conditions.

Trichloroacetic acid peels

For a peel that has similar results to a laser, indulge in a TCA peel. These are medium depth peels and require one to two weeks of downtime until crusting heals so don’t plan one the day before a big date or for that matter a beach vacation as you’ll need to be vigilant with staying out of the sun immediately after the treatment. The payoff: Smoother, younger, clearer more vibrant skin.

Used in the treatment of; deep pigmentation, moderate lines, age spots, freckles, and shallow scars. Of the three peels, this is the one that shows the most dramatic change in the skin.

Many combination peels are also available that show excellent results in melasma, acne, acne scars and ageing related skin issues.
